CAIRO- ICCNEWS: Article 40 of the Egyptian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion to all citizens of the country. Three recent court cases see to render the existence of this right only on paper. All Egyptian citizens are required to carry an identity card which include a statement of religion.
Last year Muhammad Hegazy converted from Islam to Christianity. He sought to change the religion on his ID card. His was the first case to seek to do so. While awaiting a court hearing Hegazy and his wife and children faced death threats, loss of employment and had their apartment burned down. Recently the Judge in the case, one M. Husseini, ruled that sharia (Muslim law) was the source of Egyptian civil law and so Hegazy would not be allowed to make the switch.
In the second case practicioners of Baha'i an unrecognized religion were permitted to obtain ID cards without stating a religion.
The third case granted 12 converts from Christianity to Islam the legal right to go back to their former religion of Christianity. At present there are over 550 similar cases pending. The Christians were not given the right to sue for their jobs back based on religious discrimination however.
