On July 4th the United Staes celebrated its 232nd birthday. Now is a good time to step back and remember what the American Revolution means. The American Revolution was an ideological revolution. It was not fought to acquire land.It was not fought to replace one king with another. It was not fought to redistribute wealth. It was not fought to replace one religon with another. It was a paradigm shift in the way power would be distributed in the world.
The American Revolution was the flower of an idea that began with the Athenians in antiquity. An idea that was protected and nurtuted by Christianity and the Scholastic philosophers and finally bore fruit in the Enlightenment of the 18th century. In a practical way the Revolution applied the idea that sovereignty came from the Creator to each person, who as a community formed "the people." Who then formed government to funtion in their stead. It is no accident that our Constitution begins"WE THE PEOPLE.
